Sieldutjokk creek

We spent four days at Sieldutjokk creek in the summer of 2001. It had been raining heavily for a couple of days before our arrival, so conditions weren’t at their best. We stayed about four kilometres downstream the footpath bridge where we found a nice place to camp close to the creek. It was a flat open space, large enough to play volleyball if we had had one, surrounded by mountain birches. All in all a very good camping spot. Plenty of firewood with a smooth and soft surface to put our tents in. This was only about six meters from the creek so we fell asleep to the sound of the water flowing by, refreshing……

The mosquitoes were almost absent, but also very few hatches of other insects which of course was a pity. The water was green and somewhat milky from the rain. It did however clear up as the days passed.

We fished all hours of the day and yes we caught plenty of fish, but mostly fish up to lb 1. The larger fish shone with their absence.

Rumour has it, that there’s trout in the lb 5 category in these waters, perhaps we should have tried weighted leaders or even sinking lines but we felt that the water levels weren’t that high.

Fly-fishing in mountain creeks is a bit weather dependant, something of a chance taking. For us it didn’t turn out all that well, but when weather conditions are good with low water and warmth in the air there can be plenty of hatches. At such conditions the fishing in Sieldutjokk creek can be very good and well worth a try.

It is a extremely beautiful valley, at least to us who come from down south and are more used to a flatter landscape. The creek has plenty of nice rapids and calmer stretches with alternating depth. Easily waded, but with shy trout.

Plenty of animals in the valley. We saw Moose, Golden eagle and Kestrel, the latter stole some of our salami sandwiches.

The helicopter arrived on time and all was as it should. After a shower at Bjorn Helamb’s in Vuoggatjolme we were on our way home, a 1075 kilometer drive south that took 14 hours in our Volvo.
